Creative Snapshots From 10-year Career at UCF
As inaugural AVP for University Marketing at the University of Central Florida (UCF), Terry Helms crafted and implemented the marketing strategies and the creative services to recruit students plus grow UCF’s reputation as a top-tier research university and destination of choice. During his 10-year career his team enjoyed many successes as enrollment grew to No. 2 in the nation, opened a medical college, completed a historic capital campaign, rebranded the university, built an agency model marketing and web team, created online newsroom, published a new magazine, opened a new football stadium and basketball arena, enrolled a record number of diverse students and National Merit Scholars, and provided a record amount of financial aid.
A New Medical College in a New Medical City
UCF Med School Anchors Health Sciences Campus
To earn local and state legislative approvals, fund a new medical college, hire an inaugural dean and staff, recruit a history-making first class, Terry Helms and his marketing team created 700+ customized pieces of marketing collateral. The medical college anchored a new medical city at Lake Nona in Orlando, FL which included partners like the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, Nemours Children’s Hospital, a University of Florida Academic and Research Center, and the Orlando Veterans Administration Medical Center. The medical city was projected to create 30,000 jobs and more than $7.6 billion in economic activity.
From Cow Pasture to Significance
Opportunity (1968 - )
In 1968, a handful of students took a chance on a new, untested university. A small school at the end of a dirt road funded by 89 ordinary citizens. Today, that school, the University of Central Florida, has changed quite a bit. Its campus is dynamic, faculty are distinguished, and yes, roads are paved. And in 2013, UCF trademarked “America’s partnership university” to underscore its historical significance and future-facing role. Here are just a few of UCF's partners: Harris Rosen, The Florida High Tech Corridor, NASA, Central Florida Research Park, Seimens, Lockheed Martin, EA Sports, Jet Blue, regional colleges, and the University Innovation Alliance.
